Beauport Ambulance has officially opened its newly refurbished Marblehead base, marking the end of a five-month renovation project that gives the town’s new ambulance provider a permanent home at 6 Sewall St.
The building, in a mixed residential and commercial block just off Washington Street, has been overhauled inside and out. The exterior now has new siding and windows and a second garage door to accommodate an additional ambulance unit. Inside, crews move through updated walls and ceiling tiles, new carpeting and vinyl flooring and new furniture throughout. The project also added a bathroom with a shower designed for crews working long shifts and overnights.
The Sewall Street base is intended as Beauport’s long-term footprint in Marblehead, housing the town’s dedicated 911 ambulance and the paramedics and EMTs who staff it around the clock.
The renovation follows a major change in Marblehead’s emergency medical coverage. This summer, the Select Board approved a three-year joint contract under which Beauport provides 911 ambulance service to both Marblehead and Swampscott with dedicated units in each town and a shared impact ambulance.
That agreement ended more than a decade of primary service by Cataldo’s Atlantic Ambulance division, which had covered Marblehead and Swampscott under previous contracts. Beauport’s 911 operations in Marblehead began Aug. 15, following the contract approval and transition period over the summer.
While the Sewall Street base was under construction, Marblehead Fire Department housed the ambulance and its crews, providing temporary living quarters and garage space so Beauport could begin service without interruption. With the renovations complete, the company has shifted staff into the new quarters, which are meant to support both rapid response and day-to-day crew well-being as Beauport settles in as the town’s ambulance provider.
