Festival of Arts puts local faces on 2027 literary calendar

Volunteer photographer Steven Rood and designer Jessica Briggs produced a 12-month fundraiser now sold at Shubie’s, Crosby’s and Arnould Gallery & Framery, with proceeds supporting next year’s book events.

Gene Arnould holds Ian McEwan's novel 'What We Can Know' and Daniel Swift's 'The Dream Factory: London's First Playhouse and the Making of William Shakespeare' on the cover of the Marblehead Festival of Arts' 2027 Literary Calendar. Flora Peach cannot read yet. That did not keep the 5-year-old, from landing a page in the Marblehead Festival of Arts’ first literary calendar.

“I like books because of the pictures. I can’t read the words yet, but the pictures tell me the story, and the letters help me to read in school,” she says.

The 2027 calendar, a full-color, 12-month edition, is the first the festival’s Literary Festival has produced, organizers said. Each month pairs a photograph of a Marblehead resident with a short quote about reading or books. Gene Arnould of Arnould Gallery & Framery is January. George Shube, described in the release as the owner of the town’s epicurean destination, is December.

Photographer Steven Rood took the pictures and Jessica Briggs designed the layout. Both volunteered their time, according to organizers.

Calendars are on sale at Shubie’s, Crosby’s and Arnould Gallery & Framery, and will be sold at the Gerry 5’s Holiday Craft Fair on Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. More outlets are planned, the release said.

The first run is limited to 200 copies. Proceeds go to the nonprofit festival, which marks 61 years in 2027, and support its annual Literary Festival of authors, workshop leaders and writers.

Margo Steiner, chair of the 2026 Literary Festival, is pitching the calendar as a holiday gift, including for people who have left town. The calendars are gifts for the coming holidays, she said, “and wouldn’t Marbleheaders who have moved away but still love the town appreciate the nostalgia?”
