Editorial standards

Corrections and accountability: The Independent corrects errors promptly and clearly. Whether it’s a misspelled name, a misquoted figure or a larger mistake, corrections are posted where readers can see them. Admitting an error is part of serving the community with honesty.

Conflicts of interest: The Independent does not accept gifts, favors or special treatment from the people and institutions we cover. We avoid financial or personal ties that could call our independence into question. Reader memberships are treated as community support. When support is substantial — such as a major sponsorship or large contribution — we disclose it in related coverage and, if necessary, step back from the story.

Sources and anonymity: The Independent uses anonymous sources sparingly and only when information is vital and cannot be obtained otherwise. When anonymity is granted, we explain why so readers understand the context. Every source is treated with dignity and respect.

Representation and inclusion: The Independent seeks to reflect the breadth of community life. We make a deliberate effort to include voices across ages, neighborhoods and backgrounds, not just the loudest or most powerful. Everyone deserves to see themselves represented in our coverage.

Digital and AI standards: The Independent uses digital tools to support reporting but never to replace human judgment. If AI or other technology contributes in a significant way – we disclose it. Journalism remains a human act of verification and storytelling.

Community standards: The Independent welcomes reader voices in letters, op-eds and comments. We require civility: no personal attacks, misinformation or discriminatory language. Our moderation aims to keep the conversation open, thoughtful and neighborly.

Legal and ethical boundaries: The Independent gathers news lawfully. We do not trespass, hack, misrepresent ourselves or publish private information recklessly. We protect the privacy of children and vulnerable people. Confidential sources and reporting materials are safeguarded.
