The Marblehead Independent publishes guest essays, columns and op-eds that help the town think, reflect, engage or laugh. We welcome diverse voices and perspectives on topics that connect to Marblehead life, issues residents care about or experiences that resonate with our community.
Essays (600 to 1,000 words):
Personal narratives, cultural criticism, reflective pieces or in-depth explorations of topics relevant to Marblehead. Essays often take a more literary or contemplative approach, whether examining local history, sharing a meaningful experience or analyzing community trends.
Examples: a reflection on changes in Marblehead’s character over decades, a personal story about raising children here or an analysis of local arts and culture.
Columns (400 to 700 words):
Recurring contributions from regular community voices who offer consistent perspectives on specific beats or themes. Columns may focus on particular areas of expertise or interest — environment, local business, parenting, history or humor. Columnists typically commit to multiple pieces over time, developing an ongoing relationship with readers. Note: For series or regular columnist opportunities, contact editor Will Dowd.
Op-eds (500 to 800 words):
Opinion-editorial pieces that advocate for specific positions on current local issues, policies or community decisions. Op-eds present clear arguments with supporting evidence and often include calls to action. Examples: positions on town meeting articles, school committee decisions, zoning changes or community initiatives.
Things to keep in mind: Submissions must be original, unpublished work exclusive to The Marblehead Independent, accompanied by a brief bio (50 words maximum), a .jpg photo and contact information. All pieces must be factually accurate, clearly written and maintain a respectful tone; submissions containing ad hominem attacks, name-calling or ridicule, scapegoating of groups, speculation about motives or straw man arguments will not be published. Disagreement is welcome but defamation is not.
The editor retains full discretion to accept, decline or edit submissions for length, clarity and style. We aim to respond within two weeks and op-eds on time-sensitive topics should be submitted as soon as possible for consideration.
