Local News Day — The Marblehead Independent
April 9, 2026

Local News Day. Our kind of day.

The Marblehead Independent covers the decisions, debates and daily life of this town — free, no paywall, reader supported.

A note from the editor

Today is the first-ever Local News Day. More than 1,000 newsrooms across the country are joining together to ask one question: do you value local news?

Do you value knowing that a single line item in Marblehead’s budget could consume nearly every dollar the town is allowed to raise in taxes — and that most residents had no idea? Do you value knowing the 44-year history of how this town votes on overrides before you walk into Town Meeting or fill out a June ballot? Do you value knowing the stories of the people who make this town what it is — the ones that would go untold without someone showing up to report them?

Then you know why we’re doing this. And we need your help to keep doing it.

This newsroom has been here every day since Sept. 15, 2025 — a dedicated group of contributors, reporters and photographers covering the decisions, debates and daily life of Marblehead. More than 550 pieces of content. 29 newsletters. No paywall. Ninety-five cents of every dollar into reporting. Right now, 108 readers sustain this work. Our goal is 175 by July.

If you value this — get on board.

What this newsroom covers.

Not aggregated content, not wire copy, not press releases published as news. The full, specific texture of life in Marblehead.

  • Town government & finance

We cover decisions before votes are final — the school budget, the override questions, the $142 million unfunded liability most residents had never heard of — while there’s still time to care.

  • Schools & School Committee

What the cuts actually mean for your childchild's#8217;s classroom. What the override means for the district. Covered clearly, before the vote.

  • Local history, culture & community life

From the Sylvia Plath connection to the man the whole town came out to say goodbye to. The stories that make Marblehead what it is.

  • Public safety & public life

The decisions, the debates and the daily life of this town — covered independently, without outside owners or advertising pressure.

108 readers keep this going.
