Virtual holiday romance talk
Booklist reviewer John Charles will share his top holiday romance recommendations during a virtual event Monday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Hosted by Ashland Public Library, the talk will feature Charles’ 2025 “best of” list for readers looking to curl up with festive titles this season.
Charles, co-author of “Romance Today: An A to Z Guide to Contemporary American Romance Writers,” spent 30 years in public libraries before joining the independent bookstore Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Last of the Right Whales” screening
Ocean advocate Sophia Naumovski will lead a screening and discussion of the documentary “Last of the Right Whales” on Monday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the library’s Event Center.
The film follows the endangered North Atlantic right whale and the people working to protect the species from ship strikes and fishing gear injuries. Naumovski, an oceans associate with Environment Massachusetts, will take questions after the showing.

Mini book sale at Council on Aging
The Friends of Abbot Public Library will hold a mini book sale Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Judy and Gene Jacobi Community Center, 10 Humphrey St.

Hangout Hub: Unicorns!
Children ages 5-10 are invited to join an occupational therapist from The Power of Speech for a unicorn-themed social group Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the Thompson Makerspace.
The session will include pretend play, crafting and creative activities designed to build social and friendship skills. Space is limited to eight participants, and registration is required at tinyurl.com/unicorn-hangout.
The Age of Beauty workshop
Marblehead Girl Scout Troop 82192 will host “The Age of Beauty: Navigating Media, Pop Culture and the Cosmetics Industry” Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Event Center.
The discussion will explore how media and advertising shape beauty standards and teach participants ages 8-14 how to make informed choices about personal care products. Activities include identifying harmful ingredients, making clean-beauty recipes and analyzing products using the Environmental Working Group database.
