Fire crews responded to a chimney fire on Lincoln Avenue last night, containing the blaze before it spread beyond the chimney, according to the Marblehead Fire Department.

With colder weather increasing fireplace use, the department is urging residents to take the following precautions:

  • Schedule an annual chimney inspection and cleaning by a certified professional.
  • Burn only dry, seasoned wood to limit creosote buildup.
  • Use a spark screen to prevent embers from escaping.
  • Never leave a fire unattended, and extinguish it completely before bed.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and test them regularly.
