The town has declared a snow emergency parking ban for three consecutive overnights due to snow accumulation, frigid temperatures and another storm forecasted for the weekend.

The parking ban takes effect at 11 p.m. tonight and will be in effect:

— Tuesday, Jan. 27, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday

— Wednesday, Jan. 28, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday

— Thursday, Jan. 29, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday

All vehicles must be removed from public roadways during those hours to allow for snow removal operations.

Vehicles found in violation may be ticketed or towed at the owner's expense. The restriction ensures roads remain clear for emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment.

The decision comes a day after the Select Board put a state of emergency in place Monday afternoon to allow the Department of Public Works to dispose of snow in the ocean. The declaration would allow the town with additional flexibility to manage the massive volume of snow that could overwhelm storage capacity at municipal sites.

Residents are urged to monitor weather forecasts, check on neighbors who may need assistance and take safety precautions including keeping house numbers visible from the street, having flashlights and battery-powered lighting available and keeping generators outdoors away from windows and doors.

Town officials remind residents not to shovel or plow snow into public streets, sidewalks or onto fire hydrants.
