Marblehead will mark its fourth annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday, Jan. 30, with a schedule of events including a midday municipal ceremony and an evening religious service.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Select Board has issued a proclamation recognizing the day and designating the month of January as Holocaust Remembrance Month.
The local observance will begin at noon in the Select Board’s Room at Abbot Hall. The event will feature a candlelight ceremony and a formal reading of the town’s proclamation by Select Board Chair Dan Fox.
Sasha Ganezer, a high school senior, will serve as a featured speaker during the afternoon ceremony. Ganezer is the grandchild of Holocaust survivors on both sides of her family and will share stories of their experiences, as well as the impact that history has had on her own life.
The events in Marblehead align with the United Nations’ official designation of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Established in 2005 and observed by nations worldwide, the day commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on Jan. 27, 1945. The day honors the memory of the more than six million Jews and millions of other minorities murdered by the Nazi regime.
Rabbi Michael Schwartz of Temple Sinai organized this year’s local Remembrance Day. Following the afternoon ceremony, Schwartz will conduct a Friday evening service at 6 p.m. at Temple Sinai, located at 1 Community Road. The service is held in commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust, and Fox will return as a guest speaker for the congregation.
Community members are invited and encouraged to attend both the observance at Abbot Hall and the evening service at the temple.
