MLT's Andrew Barnett honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Marblehead Little Theatre’s Andrew L. Barnett has been recognized with the Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theatres’ Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award.

Barnett, who serves as the theatre’s facility manager and technical director, has been a fixture of Marblehead Little Theatre for more than three decades. The board of directors, which nominated him, called him “the heart and soul of MLT,” crediting his leadership since his sons first became involved in the theatre.

He has overseen the converted firehouse at 12 School St. in Marblehead, since 2006, ensuring its upkeep and securing grants for improvements. Colleagues praised his knack for achieving what seems impossible, from building complex set pieces to cultivating partnerships with Coastline Ballet, the Salem Boys & Girls Club and Marblehead High School’s drama program.

Barnett’s contributions extend to producing, designing and building sets for nearly every production since 1993. The board noted his ability to transform the black box stage into “other worlds.” He also plays a central role in the children’s theatre program, where he gives the same meticulous attention to youth productions as he does to mainstage shows.

“In truth, I view this award as a recognition of the caliber and collaboration of the entire MLT organization — the donors, the board, the actors, directors and producers, and the quality of the shows MLT selects each season,” Barnett said.

Founded in the 1940s, MLT is among the oldest community theatres in New England.
