Police closed a section of Humphrey Street Thursday evening near the Broughton Road Marblehead Housing Authority complex and the Gene and Judy Jacobi Community Center as officers investigated a single-vehicle crash.

The Marblehead Police Department responded at approximately 4:23 p.m. to a report of a crash in the area of 10 Humphrey St., according to a statement from police chief Dennis King. Marblehead police and fire units arrived within minutes and located a vehicle with extensive damage.

Officers rendered aid to the driver and sole occupant, who was treated and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for injuries.

A police cruiser blocked traffic near the signalized intersection, with emergency lights visible from additional vehicles farther down the roadway, according to photographs taken at the scene. A traffic advisory indicated Humphrey Street was closed as of about 5:25 p.m.

Marblehead Police, the Essex County District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police are working on the active investigation, King said.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
