Salem Arts Association to open new gallery on Pickering Wharf

SALEM — Salem Arts Association announced it will open a new gallery and shop at 88 Wharf St. on Pickering Wharf, marking what the nonprofit called “a new chapter” in its mission to expand visibility, accessibility and community partnerships.

The organization, which has operated at 159 Derby St. since January 2020, was informed the building owner planned a new use for the space in mid-December. Salem Arts then began searching for a new home, touring more than 15 sites before selecting the Wharf Street storefront.

“The location is ideal,” said Deborah Greel, president of Salem Arts Association. “It has so many positives — great foot traffic, street-level windows, handicap access, and a thriving group of commercial neighbors.”

Director Patti Baker said the move is already creating new opportunities for members. “The new space offers expansive front windows to highlight exhibitions and the gallery shop,” Baker said. “We’re planning a more robust education program and developing partnerships to host exhibits throughout Salem businesses. We’ll also open with a Member Holiday Showcase starting in mid-to-late November.”

The Member Holiday Showcase will serve as the inaugural exhibition in the new space and will run through December. The gallery will close for the month of January for minor renovations to better accommodate artists and visitors, then reopen in mid-February with its 2026 season of exhibitions.

The association also plans to broaden its reach through collaborations across the city. A partnership with Salem State University is in development, and additional discussions are underway for a series of pop-up exhibits at Salem businesses and venues.

Founded in 2007, Salem Arts Association is a volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to “bringing art, in all its forms, to the community — and bringing the community, in all its diversity, to the arts.” The group has produced hundreds of exhibitions, events and workshops for residents and visitors.
