The Select Board and Cemetery Commission voted Wednesday night to appoint Sally Sands to the Cemetery Commission, filling a vacancy created by Jerry Tucker’s resignation.

Tucker stepped down last month after moving out of Marblehead, making him ineligible to continue serving under town residency requirements. He and his family relocated to Salem, according to prior reporting. Tucker had been elected in June 2025 to a three-year term after initially being appointed in fall 2024.

Sands will serve the remainder of Tucker’s term, which runs through 2028.

A longtime Marblehead resident, Sands has previously served more than a decade on the Old & Historic District Commission and chaired the Old North Church Board of Trustees. She has also been active in local civic and church leadership roles.

The Select Board and Cemetery Commission interviewed candidates jointly before making the appointment. Board members thanked Tucker for his service and said they were pleased to have multiple residents express interest in the seat.

The Cemetery Commission oversees the town’s burial grounds and works with staff on policies, maintenance and long-term planning. Sands’ appointment restores the three-member board to full capacity following Tucker’s departure.
