Symposium to explore Marblehead’s forgotten trade ties with Spain

Table of Contents

A symposium at Salem State University will explore the historic trade ties between New England and the Iberian Peninsula that once made the Spanish Basque city of Bilbao “practically Marblehead’s sister city.”

The event, titled “To Drive a Great Trade for Bilbao: Rediscovering New England’s Iberian Ties, 1640s–c.1830,” will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Petrowski Room at Marsh Hall on Salem State’s Harrington Campus. A remote viewing option is available, and registration is required.

Local and Spanish historians will discuss how the cod trade connected North Shore seaports with Iberian ports, relationships that helped pave the way for Spanish support of the American Revolution in 1775.

The symposium coincides with the Marblehead Museum’s exhibition “Bilbao Bound,” on view at 170 Washington St. through Dec. 24.

The event is presented by the Marblehead Museum, Itsasmuseum Bilbao and Salem State’s History Department, with support from Iberdrola and Avangrid, the Society of Colonial Wars in Massachusetts and other partners.
