To the editor:
On Nov. 3, I hope every eligible voter will take the time to become informed, consider the choices and cast their ballot. Our democracy depends on the participation of its people. Voting matters, not simply as a political activity, but as one of the fundamental responsibilities and privileges of being an American. Our system of government is built on the principle that the people have a voice in choosing those who represent them, and our federal and state laws and public policies affect all of us.
Voting matters to me because I want to have a say in the future of my community and my country. The choices made by elected officials affect the schools our children attend, the care families can afford, the safety of our neighborhoods, the environment we leave behind and whether every person is treated fairly. It’s easy to feel that one vote cannot make a difference, but close elections repeatedly show otherwise. A handful of votes can determine who represents us and what priorities guide government. Voting is more than choosing a candidate; it is a statement that public officials are accountable to the people they serve. Whether we agree or disagree on the issues, participating is how we ensure that our community—and our country—remains governed by its people.
I encourage every eligible voter to make a plan now to: confirm your voter status and register if you are unregistered, learn about the candidates and Massachusetts ballot questions and vote on or before Nov. 3. Voting is easy – you can vote by mail, participate in early voting or go to the polls on Election Day.

Let’s make Nov. 3 one of the biggest voter turnouts ever and show our elected officials that we are paying attention and that we care.
