Jennifer Wilkins, a special education teacher at Village School, has been named one of this year’s recipients of the Margaret Voss Howard Teacher Recognition Award.
Wilkins was honored in a school ceremony for her work supporting students with complex learning needs and for creating opportunities for inclusion across school activities. She shares this year’s award with Jonay Gonzalez Morera, a preschool bilingual teacher at Bentley Academy Innovation School in Salem.
Award organizers said the honorees were recognized as “representatives of all the excellent, dedicated teachers in the community who make a difference to children every day.”

Wilkins’ nominators praised her exceptional care for students and her efforts to build a stronger school community beyond the classroom. They cited, among other examples, a yearly Thanksgiving morning feast that brings students and staff together and has become a valued Village School tradition.
Gonzalez Morera was recognized for creating a welcoming classroom environment for young learners. A parent nominator credited him with helping her child feel confident, nurtured and excited to learn.
The award, now in its 17th year, includes a cash award and certificate of merit. It is a fund of the Essex County Community Foundation. Recipients are selected by a committee of local school administrators and Margaret “Peg” Voss Howard from nomination letters submitted by educators, students and community members.
