Grenades found during Marblehead house clean-out rendered safe by bomb squad

Several military devices, including grenades, were discovered Tuesday during a house clean-out on Arrowhead Road, according to Fire Chief Jason Gilliland. Two of the devices had to be rendered safe by the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad.

The items were found in a garage loft, where officials believe they had been stored for decades. Crews removed the devices from the property and brought them to the town transfer station, where the bomb squad could safely neutralize them away from the neighborhood.

“They were in a loft in the garage, been there about sixty years,” the chief said. The devices were taken to the transfer station “to render them safe away from houses and people,” he added.

Photos shared by the department show grenades, a mortar-style round and other ordnance laid out on pavement at the transfer station.

No injuries were reported.
