Understanding addiction and recovery series launches

Table of Contents

A new six-week community education series designed to build understanding of addiction and substance use disorders launches Feb. 3, with sessions held on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. via Zoom.

The free program aims to reduce stigma and support healthier responses to addiction, featuring topics including what addiction and recovery look like, signs and symptoms of substance use disorders, the science of addiction and recovery, how addiction impacts families and communities, strategies for responding to someone who may be struggling and local resources and pathways to help.

Michelle Simons, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified addictions counselor, and Gina Rabbitt, a master level mental health professional and certified addictions general specialist, will facilitate the series through the Swampscott and Marblehead Health Department.

“All are welcome,” according to program materials. “Respect and confidentiality are prioritized.”

The series targets community members, people in recovery, parents, caregivers, educators, professionals and anyone seeking a clearer understanding of addiction. Participants can join via Zoom using meeting ID 883 0361 0970 with passcode “Understand.”

The program addresses a growing concern about substance use disorders in communities nationwide. By providing evidence-based education and fostering open dialogue, organizers hope to equip attendees with knowledge and resources to support individuals and families affected by addiction.
