Washington Street will be closed from the bottom of Pleasant Street to Rockaway Street from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, while children trick-or-treat through the business districts, the Marblehead Police Department said in a release.

Summer Street will also be closed during that window. Drivers reaching the end of Pleasant Street will be detoured left onto Washington Street, and traffic on Washington Street will be directed to turn left onto Rockaway Street. Police asked drivers to seek alternate routes.

The closures are for the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce’s Trick-or-Treating in the Business Districts event, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Police said they will assist the chamber with the event.

For Halloween itself, the department recommends that trick-or-treating take place between 5 and 8 p.m.

The release also asked that young trick-or-treaters be accompanied by an adult and that older children use the “buddy system” so no one walks alone. Police said children should dress for the weather and wear reflective clothing or carry flashlights so drivers can see them after dark.

Drivers, the department said, should slow down and watch for trick-or-treaters who may not be paying attention to traffic.
