The ocean is a special place. The words of the little happy feelings I experience when I am under the water cannot be described. It is the place where I can feel the most safe and truly feel a true small measure of peace in the solitude of waters.

Seeing the vibrant colours and life in the crystal column of the water is indeed spiritual with each heartbeat in the depths.

I feel my soul is connected to the water every time I go in and it is akin to being welcomed home as I feel it is truly my place where I belong.

I feel like all my worries are washed away and truly where I feel like my soul is being purified and my wounds healed. The experience is truly meditative as I let my mind go free. The negativity of life above the water has no place in the depths.

The happiness I feel reawakens the jolly child in me in the spirit of adventure and each sight of the various lifeforms brings me back to my most happy memory of childhood. I sometimes wonder if this is what heaven is really like?

Ryan Park, a Marblehead resident and practicing dentist, writes "Beneath the Blue," an occasional column in which he shares the experiences, challenges and discoveries of freediving in photos and words.
