Months before he died, Marblehead High School senior Owen Coyne registered as an organ donor. A release from the Boston Celtics and Regan Communications Group says that decision saved five lives. The team posthumously honored the 17-year-old as a Hero Among Us during its Oct. 23 home game against the New York Knicks.

Coyne played three sports and was a co-captain of the Marblehead High football team. He died in October following complications from a brain hemorrhage, according to the release.

His family joined the Celtics at center court for the recognition. The release said he was remembered for his leadership and generosity and had earned the respect of his classmates and teammates.

The Celtics started the Heroes Among Us program in 1997. The team presents the award at every home game to people it says have made lasting contributions to their communities.
